The experienced coach has claimed league championships in four different countries

The veteran manager announces he is on the verge of being named the Lisbon-based club manager after landing in Lisbon for talks with the Portuguese club.

The 62-year-old is expected to replace the former coach, who was dismissed following Tuesday's Champions League loss at home against the Azerbaijani side.

The 62-year-old has only been without a club for under a month after being dismissed by Fenerbahce.

"Benfica officially asked me if I was keen. What coach says no to Benfica? Not me," he told reporters after landing in the city. "After I was presented with the opportunity to coach them, I didn't hesitate to say that I'm eager, that I'd want to."

He began his managerial career with the club in 2000 but took charge of only 10 games and departed after a dispute with the club president.

He then made his name with FC Porto between 2002 and 2004, claiming six titles - among them the Champions League in 2003-04.

Since leaving his native country in 2004, he has managed Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, United, Spurs, Roma and the Turkish club.

He left the Turkish club on August 29, two days after they were knocked out from the UCL qualifiers by Benfica.

Should Benfica appoint him, he would face the London club in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge on 30 September.

The team also travel to Newcastle United and welcome the Spanish giants later in the group stage of the competition.
