Thomas Tuchel Claims Best Players Don't Always Make Up the Best Squad

The England manager declared that assembling the most talented players does not guarantee creating the best squad dynamic. He hinted regardless of whether Jude Bellingham were fully fit after his shoulder injury, the player could still have missed out from the recent England squad.

Focus on Team Spirit

The Three Lions' manager further revealed that Bukayo Saka's return might not have occurred if his teammate the injured winger been available. Tuchel has placed great importance on squad unity in his selection for the forthcoming Wales friendly and World Cup qualifier in Latvia.

"We're building the strongest squad," stated Tuchel, who questioned the traditional thinking that World Cup winners typically choose their top forwards.

Previous Results

Tuchel pointed to the excellent atmosphere during last month's international break where the national team beat Andorra and performed brilliantly versus the Serbian team in Bellingham's absence. Tuchel observed no reason to alter the group dynamic that produced such positive performances.

  • Jude Bellingham excluded even though club comeback
  • Phil Foden omitted despite improved form
  • Jack Grealish also missed out

Physical Condition Factors

Although the manager partly attributed Bellingham's absence to fitness concerns, he recognized that the player wanted to be included during their conversation. Tuchel had earlier said sorry to the midfielder for comments about his on-field conduct.

"Don't you think that attitude on the bench, commitment in sessions, and squad unity enables the starting eleven to perform at their best?" he questioned.

Squad Selection Justification

Tuchel emphasized that his selections weren't individual targeting specific individuals but rather rewarded those who had performed in the last campaign.

"What would be my explanation to leave them out and still be credible in my words?" Tuchel asked.

Injury Enforced Changes

The sole alteration in selection was compulsory with the unfit Noni Madueke making way for the returning Bukayo Saka. Tuchel clarified that even Saka might have missed out if Madueke remained fit.

Other absentees featured Chelsea's attacking midfielder, who continues to struggle with injury problems. With only two more camps prior to the tournament, opportunities are diminishing for some players to impress.

Tournament Timing Issues

Tuchel expressed his preference for national team matches to start later due to heat concerns in North America. He acknowledged this might cause watching problems for UK supporters but insisted player welfare must come first.

"I understand supporters will not like it but for us it's preferable with later kickoffs," he stated. "The players are the game and we have to protect them."
