The former Duke of York to Lose Honorary Rank, Says UK Defense Minister

Prince Andrew loses his naval title as King Charles attempts to draw a line under the continuing controversy surrounding his brother's relationship with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Stripping of Honors In Progress

Andrew Mountbatten Windsor faces removal of his military title of naval commander, which he was granted in 2015 and maintained even after relinquishing other military positions in 2022.

The defense minister announced on Sunday that ministers were working with the king to strip his military titles.

"Usually, the administration follows the decisions and judgments the king has made. Regarding military matters, it's precisely identical," Healey stated.

Further Repercussions

Asked whether the former duke could forfeit his service awards as well, the minister answered that they were "awards recognizing his military career" and continued: "There's no current information on that, but similar to his naval title, we would be guided by the judgments the king makes."

Historical Circumstances

The former royal has been facing fresh examination over his relationship with Epstein following the release of posthumous memoirs by Virginia Giuffre, who alleges she was compelled into sexual encounters with Mountbatten Windsor on multiple instances, including when she was a teenager.

Recently disclosed emails demonstrate that the ex-royal wrote to Epstein in 2010 after the financier got out from jail on allegations involving sex trafficking.

In the correspondence made public recently, the disgraced financier proposed that Andrew meet former JP Morgan executive Jes Staley, who was prohibited from the UK banking sector for life in June for deceiving regulators about his connections to Epstein.

Military Service

The former duke was a member of the navy for more than two decades, including as a helicopter pilot during the 1982 conflict. After a civil case was initiated three years ago, he stopped using most of his armed forces honors but retained the rank of naval commander.

His military retirement pay is his only current source of official earnings after serving between 1979 and 2001, reportedly totaling £20,000 a year.

Recent Developments

Royal officials formally announced last week he would be stripped of the honors of royal titles, as well as being required to vacate his home in Windsor and relocate to private accommodation in Sandringham.

Palace officials had worked with civil servants in the government department to avoid the decision having to be taken by parliament, finally deciding that the king should remove the title entirely using his monarchical authority.

While the loss of his titles takes effect immediately, the ex-royal is not anticipated to vacate Royal Lodge until following the holidays, meaning he will not be present when the family convenes at Sandringham for the festive season.
