Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's One-Day International Team Against India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-game ODI series versus India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a surprise selection.
Performance Issues Result in Omission
Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international team after being dismissed for one in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a highest score of 47 in his last 10 ODI innings.
The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a Test recall ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Surprise Inclusion and Team Updates
Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
The left-hander may to make his ODI debut in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a return to the Test team as Australia seek a fix to their top-order woes.
Pace Returns and Fitness News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after being rested since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he works to regain fitness from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Schedule
Australia have selected a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a 2-0 series win last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from October 29.
