To his neighbors, Jihad al-Shamie gave the impression of having a fairly ordinary life: a new father who exercised with dumbbells and often parked poorly in front of the residence he lived with his parents.

The son of an emergency surgeon, Shamie seemed to have a content early years, with siblings who were younger who went on to have promising professions in computing and pharmacology.

Yet following the fatal shooting after carrying out a deadly antisemitic attack, a more complete understanding has come to light. Investigators found that Shamie was previously declared insolvency, previously sentenced for petty crimes and an alleged rapist when he set upon worshippers celebrating the religious holiday.

Conventional Upbringing

Jihad al-Shamie had what appeared to be a conventional upbringing in Manchester throughout that decade. Via personal footage recorded to send to his grandfather in Syria, he cuddles a cat in the back garden, informing his parent he wishes to give it food; in another he assists his younger brother on a playground equipment in the yard.

Shamie was raised alongside two younger brothers, the family enjoying days out to entertainment venue, wildlife attraction and the retail destination, and the boys took part in school nativity plays during the festive season.

Where they once lived, near the healthcare institution where Shamie’s parent was employed, neighbors described a “typical young child” who was part of a “nice family””.

He would interact positively with peers on the street, and the sole peculiar aspect a neighbor mentioned was that he passed much of his time engaging with electronic entertainment – so much that it caused excessive blinking.

“They were all right, the parent was employed across the street, he came across as friendly, regularly conversed with me. They were just a nice family, the mom often talked with neighbors. He used to play on a game, he would spend entire days playing, his eyes would frequently blink.”

‘A Regular Young Man’

Residents living in his peaceful neighborhood in Prestwich portrayed him as a “straightforward, ordinary lad” who would frequently work out in his yard area, lifting sets of weights, with someone noting he frequently positioned his vehicle poorly in front of her home.

The household reportedly relocated to the attached residence, roughly two miles distant from the location of the incident, around a decade and a half prior, when Shamie was approaching his second decade. During the siblings' childhood, the family lived in nearby Crumpsall.

Child of a Medical Specialist

His dad, Faraj al-Shamie, worked globally as a medical specialist, operating in war-torn areas internationally, covering nations like Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan. He was engaged with humanitarian organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, and received instruction from famous doctor David Nott in the Mosul municipality within Iraq.

Household's Position

Faraj al-Shamie has separated the relatives from his offspring's assault, sharing a statement on Facebook that read: “Reports emerging from Manchester about the assault directed against a Hebrew temple has been a deeply disturbing for our family.

“Our family unit both domestically and internationally strongly condemns this horrific action, which affected unarmed, ordinary people. We fully distance ourselves from this attack and express our deep shock and sorrow regarding these events. We extend our sympathy to those affected and their relatives, and we hope for their resilience and peace.”

Individual Circumstances

Shamie had earlier served as an educator, instructing in language and coding. Yet, records showed him jobless in state bankruptcy files which indicated he applied for debt management last September while living at the family home. Only thirty days following, his dad uploaded an image of him with a newborn, captioning the picture “Wonderful New Grandchild”.

Previous Legal Issues

Authorities disclosed that Shamie was under investigation for sexual assault when he drove his small black Hyundai into congregation members at the synagogue. It is not known when the alleged sex attack happened but it is believed to have occurred recently. He was subject to ongoing scrutiny by Greater Manchester police.

He had encountered problems earlier, according to sources, who mentioned his previous convictions for additional minor violations. He was nevertheless not monitored by anti-terrorism units or security services prior to the attack.

Radicalisation

In the hours since the attack, investigators have been pulling apart all aspects of his background to determine which influences directed him on the path to terror. The process entails studying call histories, researching personal connections, and analyzing his online activity.

He appears to have been fixated on the plight of Muslims in certain Middle Eastern regions, notably in current times concerning Gaza. An X account, believed to belong to Shamie has a machinegun as its profile picture, alongside a white flower, and seemingly a holy text.

One entry on the dormant X account references the bombing of Manbij in Syria in 2016, and calls on God to “stand up against those who wronged and killed them.”
