Synthetic pictures claiming to show Venezuela's president under arrest following his apprehension by the American authorities have garnered tens of millions of views online.

The Way Fake Pictures of the President Appeared Soon After

Initial fabricated AI image apparently displaying him being escorted off a aircraft circulated shortly after. This image was not shared any verified government accounts; it was instead uploaded on X by an profile purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

Verification involved Google’s SynthID, determining the picture was produced or modified with generative AI.

Additional AI-generated pictures began to spread in the following period, appearing to show different views of the leader detained. Discernible identifying marks on these pictures show they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.

SynthID indicates these additional images were similarly produced using AI technology.

Authentic Image Released but Fabrications Continued

Donald Trump released the first real photo of Nicolás Maduro restrained aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. However, despite this confirmation was published, AI-generated images kept circulating but were altered to include the grey athletic wear worn by Maduro.

Digital forensics show the new fake images were originally uploaded on the video platform by a graphic design profile. Once again, SynthID says the new graphics were created or altered AI tools.
