Bellingham Needs to Eliminate the Immature behavior to Earn a Key Place In Manager Thomas Tuchel.
Should Bellingham hopes to force his way into the English strongest team, it would be smart to do away with the unnecessary reactions. His response when he saw that his number was being shown after a match of mixed performance in the match against Albania was not good enough.
"I’d rather not overstate it but I stick to my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect towards the squad members who enter the game," Tuchel said. "Decisions are made and you have to accept it when you're on the field."
Bellingham has to learn. There was no need for a tantrum. Harry Kane had just put England two goals ahead in a meaningless fixture, the game had six minutes to go and Bellingham, who had not played particularly well, had just been booked for fouling Armando Broja. This was hardly a questionable change. In fact it might have been reckless for the head coach to not substitute him given that there was a chance Bellingham would be suspended of the first match of the World Cup by picking up a another booking.
Turning the Spotlight Upon Himself
But Bellingham drew all eyes toward himself. There was no disguising the player's annoyance as he realized that his replacement was ready for Morgan Rogers. His arms went up in exasperation and while he exchanged a handshake while heading to the sideline there was no doubt that Tuchel was not impressed.
This is the challenge that Bellingham must overcome. He praised his teammate for delivering the cross for Harry Kane to head in his second of the night, but his other actions was harmful to his cause. There was no chance protesting was going to reverse the substitution. The coach has repeatedly emphasized respecting team hierarchies and the value of showing proper conduct.
Facing Examination
He, left out of last month’s squad, has faced close inspection upon his return to the squad in the current camp. Essentially he was being assessed and his actions haven't benefited him through his behavior to being taken off as the side wrapped up a flawless qualification run by defeating a spirited effort from Albania.
Tactics and Formation
It means opinions are divided on how the squad operate most effectively including Bellingham. The evidence here was not definitive. Some new ideas were tested by the coach early on. Under him, England have gained England a clear system lately, using a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder and out-and-out wingers, but there was a different feel versus Albania. Jarell Quansah was given his first cap, the midfielder was in the starting lineup at this level and the positioning of John Stones as a makeshift midfielder meant there was similar look to City's 2023 treble winners.
Inconsistent Display
His performance was inconsistent. He made a chance for his teammate during the second half but often looked overly eager to shine. There were a lot of hurried and errant passes. An unnecessary confrontation with a rival player early on. England were ragged after halftime. A scoring chance for the opponents followed he lost the ball cheaply. The yellow card occurred when he was dispossessed from Broja and fouled the former Chelsea striker.
Depth Makes the Difference
Ultimately England’s depth proved crucial. Tuchel threw on Phil Foden, who seemed more comfortable to the role that Bellingham had played in the opening period, and Saka. Eventually Saka delivered a set-piece for Harry Kane to break the deadlock. It was a reminder that dead-ball situations will play a key role at the World Cup.
Bridge Still Stands
Nevertheless, all talk was about Bellingham. The quality of the winger's delivery for the second goal was a little lost due to the fuss of the player change. After the final whistle, all eyes were on Bellingham. The coach approached to his side and directed the Real Madrid midfielder towards the travelling England fans. Their connection remains intact. The coach isn't ready to give up on the player just yet. But if he is willing to give him the central position remains in doubt.
