A Look at Ebony & Ivory – A Bizarre Independent Film That's Far From Its Musical Namesakes

Directed by the filmmaker, known for a wacky understated absurdist style, this film delivers a strange stoner comedy coming across as similar to an epic sketch from an acclaimed comedy duo. Moviegoers might find themselves chuckling with a feeling of giving up, unable to process the constant and surreal dialogue between the main characters.

The Premise

Located on the Mull of Kintyre back in the '80s, the story features an artist called Paul with an imitation Scouse dialect. He welcomes a guest traveling by a dinghy through stormy grey waters. Enter a sightless Black music legend referred to as Stevie, yet somehow appears to notice and imitate Paul’s oddest habit: a playful thumbs-up.

This pair are acted with performances from a regular collaborator alongside another familiar face, among Hosking’s frequent collaborators.

Bizarre Moments

With tea, a strong spirit, and some cannabis, the conversations progress as if beings from different worlds coming together on unfamiliar ground. Their dynamic changes between suspicion and animosity, before finding an unexpected rapport. Their connection holds up by mutual antics such as taking a dip cold waves, dressing up in woolly costumes and making animal sounds, plus additional unusual escapades.

Behind the Song?

Will this odd get-together really inspire the environment for two great talents to create among the ultimate well-known pro-harmony pop songs of all time? It's possible. However not once are viewers shown truly discuss the music, try out tunes, or compose words – probably owing to legal restrictions. Even so, it offers humor such as the character again and again exclaims “Scottish cottage” with a strong US dialect. This level of absurdity is a unique treat.

Ebony and Ivory debuts across UK and Irish movie houses starting the 19th of September.
