2026 Hailed as the Year of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Considering a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been not at all new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. However, their prevalence has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this rise, I undertook a detailed review into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming looks uniquely powerful.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues lend themselves to a myriad of innovative control schemes.

Many of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

If these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be on the verge of a genuine croaking cultural moment.
